Dont Smoke, Dont Drink, Dont Have Sex!
Was screamed happily by early 1980s youth. This is a maxim that supported the
straight edge culture. An
informally organised, international network of youth. A
subculture based upon the abstinence of drugs,
alcohol, and promiscuous sex was created. The
network is linked by a type of music called hardcore.
Hardcores often roaring vocals and tumultuous
instruments are the ultimate framework for a revolution;
its noisy anthems inspire and unify straight edgers
from Buffalo to Bulgaria. In a 1996 interview with Chris
Hannah, vocalist for the Winnipeg, Manitoba punk
/
hardcore band Propagandhi, he claimed that music has
historically always been at least a peripheral
element
of radical and revolutionary
movements. From Mao
Tse-tungs use of Chinese
folk songs to assist in his
Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution to contemporary
use of music by female-forward
riot girl rock, music
has
been a medium for expression by reformist movements.
![]() Though drug-free youth may be an extraordinary
formation, the Straight Edge culture has been growing
and flourishingall this time. With media reports of
heroins returning popularity and various studies
claiming that kids are having sex and exploring drugs
at earlier ages, it is then especially significant
that
Straight Edge is actually expanding. Contradictory to
what their parents may think, as the evidence of drug
use, promiscuous sex, and AIDS becomes apparent,
kids are not rushing to adhere to the statistics.
Instead, some kids are repudiating these practices
by
joining a collective which opposes them.
Growing up
in a milieu of drugs and AIDS, Straight
Edge is a
vociferation against the era in which they
have existed.

some devoted edgers.

![]() For those of you that aren't Straight Edge, many web pages simply define Straight Edge as
a counter culture that holds the soul belief of "No drugs, no alcohol and no promiscuous sex." But for those that are true
(Hardcore) Straight Edge, it is more than those abstinences. It is defying society's control over your mind and body. No trends,
no fronts, just the mind set of wanting to make a difference in your own life and for those that are too clouded (drugged,
brainwashed, stupid) to make their own choices. Straight Edge is a comment for life.
![]() Ian Mackaye, vocalist for the early
1980s band Minor Threat,
gave this
music arena a name
with a song
titled "Straight Edge":
Im a person just like you But Ive got better things to do
Than sit around and fuck my head Hang out with the living dead
Snort white shit up my nose Pass out at the shows
I dont even think about speed Thats something I just dont need
Ive got the straight edge Im a person just like you But Ive got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope Cause I know I can cope
Laugh at the thought of eating ludes Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never want to use a crutch Ive got the straight edge. |
